Marina 1: Expanding Function and Comfort

Neighborhood: Marina
Project Elements: Bedroom, Bathroom, Kitchen
Architect:
Takami Group

About the Project:
This Marina renovation focused on improving both the functionality and flow of the home through a thoughtful redesign of the floor plan. The project centered on expanding the kitchen and introducing a new full bathroom while enhancing the overall bedroom suite.

The work began with navigating San Francisco’s permitting process, coordinating closely with the architect and city reviewers to ensure the proposed layout changes met code requirements while preserving the character of the building. With approvals in place, we were able to move forward with a design that maximized the potential of the existing footprint.

Through careful planning, we reconfigured the layout to add a full bathroom and expand the kitchen, unlocking previously underutilized space and improving the home’s overall livability. One of the most meaningful outcomes of the redesign was the creation of a true primary en suite, giving the homeowner a more private and cohesive bedroom retreat.

In addition to the structural improvements, we worked closely with the homeowner to select new finishes for both the existing powder bath and bathroom, refreshing these spaces while maintaining a consistent design language throughout the home.

The homeowner was so pleased with the results that when the remaining unit in the building came on the market, he purchased it and again enlisted JAWA to assist with design upgrades for that space and its affiliated in-law unit to support rental income while he considers future expansion, redevelopment, and personal use over time.
